Jan 28th 7.30pm online talk “Heritage at Risk in the Eastern Region. Trudi Hughes.”, Trudi, a surveyor with Historic England East, is accredited in building conservation, and is experienced in all aspects of advice on the historic built environment with extensive experience within the private and public sectors. What is the state of our historic environment in the Eastern Region? What can we, as members of the public, contribute to safeguarding history? This is a Free Event
Feb 25th 7.30pm online talk. Conservation of finds from the ‘London’ wreck. Angela Middleton, Senior Archaeological Conservator, Historic England. The ‘London’ was a 17th Century ship sunk in the Thames Estuary off Southend in Essex. Following tidal erosion, artefacts were lifted from the site and conserved. Angela will talk about the challenges of maritime finds processing, and what we have learned to date about the ‘London’. This is a Free Event
March 25th 7.30pm. More than food: What animal remains can tell us about life in the past. Dr Hayley Foster, Oxford Archaeology (Cambridge) Insights into the evidence we can collect from zooarchaeological material. Just old bones? What do we learn about people from studying faunal remains? Friday May 2nd (Time TBC) : A tour of Bulmer Brickworks The Bulmer Brick and Tile Company has been managed by the Minter family since the 1930s, with each generation playing a key role in all aspects of the business. Unlike many other brickyards, they have continued to make every brick by hand, and as such have worked on conservation and restoration projects involving material from Roman Britain onwards. A tour of the site would take in the traditional process, from the on-site clay face through to the downdraught kilns, as well as provide opportunities to visit the Special Shed and Cutting Shop. Tuesday 1st July: Alpheton / Bridge Street Roman Estate Complex Excavation Tour A substantial complex ranging over 10 acres near the Nucleated Roman Settlement of Long Melford dating from the Iron Age. As part of the UCL summer student training under Dr Stuart Brookes three open areas of excavation will expose a Bath House and other features possibly prehistoric. The site tour will follow a comprehensive introduction including previous finds etc. The tour is arranged on a first come – first served basis and maybe limited numbers. The site in generally flat with only slight inclines and could be wheelchair friendly depending on weather. However possible parking restrictions and accessibility make it necessary to meet in Long Melford at 10.30am. Please register: cbaeast@archaeologyuk.org

Thursday July 24th at 10am. Visit to a medieval moated site in Fulbourn, Cambs. Meet at the entrance to Fulbourn Fen Nature Reserve on Stonebridge Lane, Fulbourn. For further information and to book your place please contact walk leader Aileen Connor by email cbaeast@archaeologyuk.org. Aileen will lead a walk to look at Hall Orchard Medieval Moat which was subject to excavation in the early 2000s. The walk is approximately 1 mile allowing 1 to 1½ hours to complete. Free parking in Fulbourn, please note that access is across rough ground. Hall Orchard Moat is the site of a medieval manor house, one of five known to have existed in Fulbourn. Aileen directed excavations on the house platform in the centre of the moat and will explain the history of the site and what was found there.
Thursday 31st July at 10am. Visit to Fleam Dyke, Fulbourn, Cambs. Meet at the entrance to Fulbourn Fen Nature Reserve on Stonebridge Lane, Fulbourn. Aileen will lead a walk to the impressive bank and ditch earthwork of Fleam Dyke, a Scheduled Monument thought to be Anglo-Saxon in date. The circular walk is approximately 2½ miles allowing approximately 2 hours to complete. The Dyke is one of four that effectively cross the route of the Icknield way running from heavily wooded higher ground in the south-east to low lying Fen in the north-west. Aileen will talk about the Earthwork, the historical context and what is known about it from past excavations.
Sunday 3rd August 2pm: The archaeology of Giant’s Hill Rampton, Cambs guided tour by Stephen Macaulay (Oxford Archaeology). The monument includes a motte castle which overlies part of an earlier medieval settlement with associated field system. To book your place please email cbaeast@archaeologyuk.org.
